Sad news just arrived, 17 Shoplots in Pangkor Town Burned down. There are no casualties but the damage is estimated at RM 1 million (around US$250.000 Mrs. Beh, who owned an shop at the end of the row told me the fire was spreading fast and it took about 2 hours before the fire was under control.

Check www.pulau-pangkor.com/ikan-bilis.html for details about Mrs. Beh's shop. Tomorrow I will visit them and hear what else there is to hear.

This morning, Sunday the 6th I was at Pulau Pangkor, in Pangkor Town. It was awful sight. There seems to be 17 shops in one row almost completely demolished by the fire craze. It is only one shop row, the fire seems to have stopped at the last shop, the ikan bilis shop of the family Beh. However, some house on the opposite of the road are damaged too. Some of the wooden roofs are burned of. Looking around it seems a miracle there were no people injured or more houses burned.

It is a horrible sight. Here's some pictures.

I honestly hope the shop owners find the will and mental power to rebuild their businesses.

Yesterday I visited some friends at Pulau Pangkor. Mr. Beh, owner of a fishing fleet at Pangkor and salesman of the famous Ikan Bilis has lost his shop too. His shop was the very last shop in the row of 17 shops that burned down though some of his shop still stands.

This is what is left of the shop of the family Beh.

There is also some good news to tell. Later in August, if all goes as expected and the permits are all in, the rebuilding of ground zero, as I would call it will start. At the moment the area is roughly cleaned up:

Of course it's not a pretty sight yet but there's good hope by the end of the year at least some of the shops will be able to re-open. As far as I know at the moment the whole row will be rebuild as one new two storey building with a three storey at the ends (Which will be the new shoplot of the family Beh.

I will keep posting new info when I have some.

September 13:the start of the rebuilding of the shop lots at Pangkor Town has started. Mr. Beh, remember http://www.pulau-pangkor.com/ikan-bilis.html told me that within the next 2 to 3 months the first shops will be open again. True? Keep an eye on this thread.

Update on the rebuilding of the new shoplots of Pangkor Town.

Just returned from Pangkor. Finally the rebuilding has started. Mrs. Beh from the Ikan Bilis shop told me the whole project will take 14 months to complete but most likely some of the shop may already be open after 10 months. Phewww... That is a long time

Update about Pangkor Town rebuilding. Just back from the island. Finally we see progress at work. The rebuilding of the shop lots have started. Mr. Beh, from the Ikan Bilis shop looked happy. His little Ikan Bilis shop is now located next to ground zero. I asked him what he will do with the present shop when the new shop is ready. "We will start producing local made fishballs here", he said.

I admit, I love fishballs. it's great Mr. Beh is going to produce them. I and I know many people here are looking forward to have them available. We, from Pulau-Pangkor.com will make them available through the website, for sale with special prices.

The rebuilding slowly starts taking shape. The first visible buildings are standing:

Total process will take officially 14 months. But Mr. Beh told me he would not be surprised in a few months, way before the time, he can enter the new shop.

Hi

Since Lumut will be filled with duathletes, cyclists, runners in 2 weeks time, I am sure many will want to hop over to Pangkor Island.

Just wondering, what's the status to date?

Yes the shops are ready, but due to paper work not fully endorsed/approved by government officials, the shop owners say that they can only move in next month - December.

Overall, I am surprised to see this little sleepy fishing town enjoying new developments. The Ferry Terminal, another nice new hotel is being built at the start of Nipah beach.

and last weekend, pangkor laut resort is fully booked!! so where's the down turn.
